Font license guide
Fontnamu lists only fonts that can be used commercially, but the terms differ from license to license. This page is general guidance; the original license text from the rights holder always prevails.
How Fontnamu checks licenses
We read each font's original license, summarize what is allowed per use in a table, and show the date we last verified it. Foundries can change their licenses, so check the original text again before you use a font.
License types
SIL Open Font License 1.1 (OFL)
You may use the font freely, including commercially, and bundle it with software or documents. You must keep the copyright notice and license text, and you may not sell the font on its own. A modified font may not use the Reserved Font Name and must be distributed under the same OFL.
Apache License 2.0
Commercial use, modification and redistribution are allowed. You must include a copy of the license and the copyright notices, and mark any changes you make.
Custom foundry license
Terms vary by foundry. Allowed uses may differ for print, web or video, and redistribution may be forbidden, so read the per-use table on the font page together with the original text.
What to check per use
Print, websites, video, packaging, app or e-book embedding, and logos are sometimes permitted separately. Embedding and redistributing the font file often carry extra conditions, and for logos check that the foundry does not restrict logo or trademark use.
Checklist before you use a font
- Confirm your intended use is marked as allowed in the per-use table on the font page
- If it says conditional, read the notes and the full license text
- If the last verified date is old, re-check the current terms at the original link
- Keep the license file that came with the font you downloaded
- If you will redistribute or modify the font, check those conditions separately

This page is not legal advice. For important commercial projects, read the original text and ask a professional or the foundry if needed.
